Concrete Word Stand In (Y)
This activity is good for children ages 3 to 7.
Often a young child will need a physical action to help them understand a concept.
Beforehand Preparation
Sing through the song and look for words or concepts that might be hard to understand for a young child. Imagine a movement that might help it be more clear. For instance, if you are singing the phrase "seek the Lord early," you might want to put your hand up above your eyes as if you were looking in the sunlight for something, then point heavenward with your fingers. The actions are a "stand in" for a concept in the song. Another concrete stand in would be a stick figure drawing that you draw as the song is being sung.
Activity
This activity is used in combination with other activities. For instance, when the children are putting together Song Puzzles as I sing, I often use a Concrete Word Stand In Action for some of the concepts as I sing. During the activity Draw the Song, I will draw stick figures to represent a concept.
Benefits of this Activity
Young children learn well through physical movement and pictures (See Chapter Seven). Good for learners that use kinesthetic or visual intelligences to learn (See Chapter Five).
